The Department of Botany, Govt. General Degree College at Kaliganj (aka Kaliganj Govt. College) is one of the newest department in Botany where the students from some rural area of the district Nadia of West Bengal such as Debagram, Plassey, Bethuadahri and places adjoining to these stations gets the opportunity to engage in serious learning and aspire to find their way into main stream of plant Science with excellence. With the broader aim of spreading higher education to rural parts of our state, this department is formed in 2015 sponsored by Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal. The department started its journey with a small number of students under the curriculum of University of Kalyani from very first year of foundation of this institution in 2015. Three batches have successfully graduated and many of them pursuing higher studies in different universities. It is a department with limited infrastructure, faculty strength and a small number of students many of them are first generation learners but despite this inadequacy the students have shown tremendous potential with not only increased number of first classes with each year but from each batches students got selected in Major Universities of our State for their higher studies. It is a humble beginning for this department which we believe will grow in long way in coming future.
About The Site
This Departmental Website was build in 2016 for maintaining the database in an innovative way when the undersigned became the Head of the department for the first time, as there were not even a departmental Computer at that time for preserving digital documents. Later the site was also used to deliver E-Content to students time to time unofficially. But later the need to utilise the departmental Website officially for delivery of E-Content was strongly felt. Therefore, with the permission of our respected Officer-In-Charge this site is now become official Departmental Website from the latest Academic session to promote Blended Learning approach which the department Strongly advocate for. I hope with time it will be beneficial for our Students. and for our department.

Our Philosophy
"Honesty is the Best Policy".. We must have heard these lines during our upbringing. It is applicable to every spectrum of life and we must be able to execute this in every work undertaken by us whether during learning or during the exams whatever the situation might be. It is easier to take shortcuts and results seems to be even better sometimes. But while doing so we may often indirectly discourage the purpose of learning. It is a necessity that we must be true to ourselves what ever we do, so that whatever we learn we can assimilate it within ourselves.We belong to an institution which is new but promising and its our duty to make the name of this department stand out as one of the best department of our subject at least in this district. The teachers of this department engaged in serious teaching and building up the departmental infrastructure to be up to the mark. The outcome is also coming to the surface with each three batches passed out having students pursuing M.Sc in Different Universities from each batch. It was a humble but a sound beginning and it is our duty to maintain this pride of our department. The duty rest upon the shoulders to teachers so that they can continue doing their work with honesty and dedication, but more responsibility rest upon the shoulder of students who can make this department proud by getting selected in esteemed institutions and/or by getting into the Service to serve the country as an honest and hardworking citizen.
Our Journey
The Department started its journey from founding year of the college, 2015, with only one Faculty member and with the first batch of students. Dr. Soumitra Paul was the founder member of the Department and the First Head of the Department. Soon another faculty member joined the department from November and the department started to run with two Faculty Members. However, Dr. Soumitra Paul left the service to join as a Faculty Member in University of Calcutta in March, 2016. The journey of the department continued under the Headship of another faculty member Sri Patha Lodh and the department completed the foundation of its own Laboratory which became operational from the immediate effect. Then finally Dr. Tulika Talukdar (Lahiri) joined and took the Charges of the Department in the August, 2016 and the journey of the department continued under her leadership for three years. Then she took up the additional duty of Officer-In-Charge of this institute leaving the charge of the department to Sri Partha Lodh again. The departmental purchases are always looked upon seriously which is crucial to build up the infrastructure and 5th FY Purchase also has been completed. Department now subscribe Science Reporter - A science monthly for students to read, Three batches (1+1+1 system) have successfully passed out with appreciable results with students from each batch pursued M.Sc and thus the journey of the department continues with newer possibilities with each new student admitted each year..
